Where To Go: 2016

2016 is upon us and unfortunately so is the frigid cold. However, that hasn’t completely stopped me from scoping out the best new culinary destinations. In fact, I’ve been craving warm soups and hearty dishes to keep me warm and content amid this horridly cold season. Here is a small but solid list of what I’ve been thoroughly enjoying thus far…

The food at Oiji tastes like how getting a hug from your grandmother feels. Their buttered rice sounds unassuming but will simultaneously warm your belly and your heart. You can’t go without getting the butter chips, they’re no joke.

Mimi Cheng’s
Mimi’s has changed the dumpling game. Serving fresh and seasonal dumplings with sophisticated flavor profiles, they know what they’re doing. Perhaps one of their most impressive dishes is their chicken broth, a rich savory broth accompanied by delicate and intensely flavorful chicken meatballs.
179 2nd Avenue
New York, NY

MarieBelle Love’s Labor Lychee Tea ($11)
This Chinese black tea blend has the most wonderful floral undertones with a strong, but not overpowering lychee presence. I’ve been sipping it daily since the weather went downhill and it hits all the right notes. You can purchase it online here, or at their store.

New York, NY

Fung Tu
The creation of a Per Se and a Nom Wah Vet, Fung Tu is satisfyingly good Chinese food that doesn’t taste like most you’ve had. The dishes are modernized and well executed but don’t get lost in over conceptualization, they’re still deeply Chinese in flavor.

New York, NY

Babu Ji
Impeccably executed Indian. It succeeds in the difficult task of creating dishes that retain the comfort and soul of tradition, but with a creative, vibrant freshness.

El Rey
A “Luncheonette” (that now serves dinner) with a variety of delicious, vegetarian dishes that pack big flavors. Hands down, best kale salad in the game.

New York, NY

Via Carota
Jody Williams of Buvette creates homey, and tender dishes with smart touches and bright flavors at her new collaboration with Rita Sodi, of I Sodi. Everything’s good.

Superiority Burger
Perhaps one of the biggest culinary accomplishments I’ve tasted in a while. Superiority’s burger is unbelievably good and completely vegetarian. You won’t miss the meat, and in turn you’ll become completely hooked.
430 E 9th Street
New York, NY

I feel so strongly about the array of handmade ice creams at Morgensterns that I needed to write about it, regardless of the season. The flavors work and the quality is incomparable, Morgensterns is simply the best. Try the burnt honey and chocolate oat.
